The role of rural development in promoting food sovereignty

Programs focused on establishing self-determined integrated community development include components such as sustainable agriculture, water supply, basic health, education, micro-credit programs and income-generating action plans. These project components constitute an important focus of EED´s funding. The women and men benefiting from the various programs are encouraged to get into the “driver´s seat” in their own development processes. They are the ones planning, implementation, and monitoring the projects and they are empowered to express their needs and interests to the local policy-makers.

One of EED’s important principles is to strengthen the cultural identity of the people such that they can rely upon and build on their traditional knowledge. Ethnic minorities and other marginalized groups as well as women are the primary target groups.
