Interrogating Peace

The Naga - Kuki Conflict in Manipur

Violence and secessionist movements have a long history in the Indian state of Manipur. Violent conflict between ethnic groups in the 1990ies has resulted in countless deaths, destruction and a deeply divided society. The level of violence today is not as high anymore but distrust prevails and relations between groups in Manipur are still tense. In this study, the renowned peace activist and researcher Urvashi Butalia investigates how communities in Manipur succeeded - in the midst of escalating violence - in maintaining their „Islands of Peace“. They stayed out of violent confrontations and maintained peaceful relations, thereby protecting their villages from destruction and - most importantly - saving lives.
