The System of Rice Intensification

A success story from Cambodia

An increasing number of farmers in Cambodia are turning to the so-called “System of Rice Intensification” (SRI) method for cultivating rice. The SRI method enables farmers to increase their yields while using less seed, less labor and fewer external inputs, helping them attain secure livelihoods. Farmers from Cambodia’s Takeo Province who have adopted this new cultivation method, increasing both production and profit, talk about their experiences with SRI. The method also helps secure adequate food supply and decrease poverty. As a result, rather than migrating to the cities in search for work, many rural families have been able to remain on their lands and continue to farm them.
