Signs of Hope - Development, Conflict and Religion in Northern Nigeria
(Bonn, 15.06.2009) A study analyses the position of Christian development programmes regarding relations between people of different faiths in Nigeria.
Despite improvements since re-democratization in 1999, Nigeria is faced with a lack of political capacity to eliminate the social and regional disparities and to promote participation and good governance. Exploring alternatives is a pre-condition to prevent violence. Community development with a focus on participation is able to bond people together. But ethno-religious conflicts have escalated during the last ten years. In many cases, the interethnic or the Muslim-Christian divides define the combat lines. The peaceful transformation of conflict requires new public policies and an active civil society. A study by Andrew Gwaivangmin and Wolfgang Kaiser analyses the position of Christian development programmes regarding relations between people of different faiths.
