New Aviation Tax Must Contribute to Climate Justice
(Bonn, 30.06.2010) The recent decisions taken by the German government in order to restore the federal budget also include a tax on air tickets to be levied from 2011. Even though only two percent of the world's population take flights at all, aviation is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. EED therefore generally welcomes the introduction of an air ticket tax by the German government as a first necessary step. However, the revenue has to benefit the people most affected by climate change: "Climate justice is not clever calculation. The revenue generated by an air ticket tax needs to feed into the UN adaptation fund", said Heinz Fuchs, director of EED's Tourism Watch desk.

Tourism is an important bridge between people in Europe and people in developing countries. But people who travel to developing countries are not necessarily helping the population of the host country. It is often only foreign entrepreneurs who benefit - with enormous hotel complexes and theme parks that harm the environment.
Tourism can contribute to development if locals profit from the income from tourism and the conservation of nature, tradition and culture have priority over economic interests. This is possible if the tourism infrastructure is integrated in regional economic processes and involves local traders.

EED and ecumenical partners are committed to sustainable, socially responsible and environmentally sound tourism. It funds exemplary tourism projects, advises churches and partners in developing countries and takes part in training local tour guides.

There is especially intensive cooperation with the Ecumenical Coalition on Tourism in Thailand and Equations in India. In Germany, EED is a member of the children's rights organisation ECPAT, which is committed to the protection of children against sexual exploitation all over the world.

The focuses of the Tourism Watch Office in EED are:

  • Raising tourists' awareness of responsible travel oriented towards encounters
  • Providing training for church travel offers
  • Getting involved in human rights and social standards
  • Dialogue with the tourism industry
  • Funding alternatives in tourism
  • Cooperating with the media and political decision makers
  • Publishing the "TourismWatch" information service (in German)
